IELTS Exam Results - A Clarification about Failing and Passing the Exam

With the demand rising abroad for English speakers, more and more people are encouraged to find employment in different companies and seek academic experience in higher learning institutes in another country. To be able to do these, these individuals need to get a good score in an English competency examination. Moreover, candidates need to be sure that they will be able to get the standard scores that are set by companies and institutions. These set scores are required to be achieved or the candidate needs to take the examination again until the candidate acquires the score. Because of this pressure, more and more individuals attend classes in IELTS training centers to gain experience and expertise for the IELTS.

Candidates for the IELTS have a choice whether to take the Academic Training or the General Training test. In the Academic Training, candidates choose this because they need an IELTS score to present to the academic institutions they are applying for. In the General Training, candidates take this because they have a need for certification to be presented to companies they are applying for work or employment and as a requirement for immigration. Whether Academic or General Training, the candidates have to achieve the standard scores.

Like any other English competency examinations, there is no pass or fail remarks in the IELTS. Candidates are evaluated according to their performance using scores from 1 to 9. The results from these four language skills – reading, listening, speaking, writing – creates an Overall Band Score (OBS).

The IELTS Exam Results are interpreted from bands 1 to 9. Band 0 suggests that the candidate has not attempted to take the tests. There is no information regarding the candidate that has been provided. Band 1 is categorized as a non-user. It means that the candidate has almost no ability to use the language except for a few words. Band 2 is an intermittent user. The candidate has basic information but has great difficulty in understanding spoken and written English. Band 3 is an extremely limited user. The person can convey and understand the only general meaning in familiar situations. Band 4 is the basic competence. The person has frequent problems with the language and is not able to use complex language. Band 5 is a modest user, has partial command with the language and can handle basic communication in own field. Band 6 has effective command in the language with some inaccuracies and can use fairly complex language. Band 7 is a good user who has generally effective command with the language and handles complex language well. Band 8 is someone who has a fully operational command with the language and handles complex detailed argumentation well. Finally, the band 9 is an expert user; a very fluent English speaker.

Common Mistakes in IELTS Speaking Assessment

Speaking in English is quite common for Filipinos. We commonly notice men and women talking in English just about everywhere - in school, in the business office, in dining establishments and even at home. Because of the integration of the English language in our education system, Filipinos are already exposed and have a long experience with the English language. Hence, as Filipinos, we are very privileged to have the possibility to have English as our second language. In the case of taking an English competency assessment such as the IELTS or the International English Language Testing System, taking the speaking test delivers anxiety to the job hopefuls making them commit blunders in the evaluation. Because of this, the prospects for the IELTS evaluation get help for tactics and practices to ensure they are aimed at their exam. What appears to be the usual mistakes candidates do in the speaking assessment?

One thing the examinees must keep from is having long breaks in giving an answer. It is okay to pause for a few seconds but not long. Pausing too long generates an opinion that one does not obviously understand what the question is all about. Avoid repeating the question. For instance the interviewer asks, What is your preferred book? Prevent saying “My most liked book is…” The interviewer studies how well a candidate can modify syntax and play with grammar. Echoing the question will not give job hopefuls a high rating.

Listen to the question properly. Some applicants answer the question right away without definitely understanding the task. As a result, they fail to answer the question efficiently. Individuals should pay attention carefully on what the task needs to create an efficient answer.

Being in front of a native speaker is definitely one factor that makes these applicants feel tense in the test. The challenge with getting worried is that it causes mental block for the prospect. Even so, when individuals are enrolled in an IELTS review, these problems are eradicated and given solution to be able to efficiently succeed in the speaking test.
