How to Speak Well in the IELTS Speaking

Conversation is an integral part of our daily lives. Having good English communication skills makes it easier for people to understand spoken English and to be understood by other English speakers. English proficiency examinations include speaking tests as a part of its evaluation. The International English Language Testing System examination’s speaking exam is sure to bring the best out of its candidate’s speaking abilities.

The speaking test of the IELTS is done in a one-on-one interview. The interview has three different tasks which are all completed in just 15 minutes. What makes the exam terrifying is the fact that examinees are interviewed by a native English speaker or someone who is trained to conduct speaking assessments. Candidates are pressured to speak well in front of their examiner to get their target speaking score. The question is: how to speak well in the IELTS speaking test?


Here are a few good tips on how to speak well in the IELTS speaking test.

  1. Have a clear pronunciation. When you cannot pronounce the words clearly, the examiner will have a hard time understanding your response. When he or she cannot understand, a low score is to be expected. There are some people whose pronunciation are greatly influenced by their mother tongue. If this is the case, it is best to listen to speaking exercises online or watch English shows and try to imitate how people talk. A good pronunciation better expresses your ideas and opinions on the given questions. 

  2. Open your mouth when speaking. When you are too nervous to talk, the tendency is that you start mumbling. For words to come out clearly, you have to open your mouth wide enough to be understood. Let the words come out freely. 

  3. Have a good command in your vocabulary. To speak well means to choose words that can fully express what you have in mind. Avoid repeating the same words in your response. It clearly shows that your word bank is limited. Use big words as long as you know when to appropriately use it in your response. 

  4. Practice good grammar. It will be difficult for your examiner to evaluate your response if it is poor at grammar. Review on subject and verb agreement as well as the verb tenses. These are basic yet fundamental aspects of English grammar necessary for a clear response. 

  5. Find a speaking partner. Ask a friend to practice speaking English with you. Be sure that this person is good at speaking the English language so as he or she can provide his comments and feedback regarding your speech. Also, speaking coaches are professionals in dealing with speaking problems. They help individuals a strong sense of confidence in speaking the English language. 

  6. Practice. Always find an opportunity to speak English. The exposure that you get in your daily life is an enough practice for you to get comfortable in using the language in different situations. 

  7. Do not be nervous. This is easier said than done. However, most speakers cannot speak clearly when they are consumed with anxiety. Candidates need to relax when having their speaking test. Imagine talking to a friend for you to be relaxed and comfortable during your assessment.

Speaking well in the IELTS examination is possible through constant practice. English is easy as long as you put a little extra effort in learning the language.
