Disadvantages of One-on-One Coaching for the IELTS Exam

One-on-one coaching can help you learn a difficult subject as your mentor can modify his/her methods based on your needs. On that note, one might think that hiring a mentor or enrolling in a one-on-one coaching may be a great way to prepare you for the IELTS exam.

However, you may want to reconsider. As beneficial as it sounds, it also comes with disadvantages, which you should weigh carefully.
Meanwhile, IELTS Cebu offers both IELTS training in a traditional classroom setup, one-on-one setup and online. You can take advantage of interacting with fellow test takers and share experiences with them.

Here are the disadvantages of one-on-one coaching:

1.)     Too much dependence
One-on-one coaching can make you dependent on your instructor to provide you with everything. Instead of doing some advance studying at home, you may tend to postpone since you can wait for your instructor to provide the materials for the lesson for you. You may also tend to show up unprepared since you know you are the only student in class.
2.)    Lack of social interaction
Being tutored alone can be boring.  Moreover, you have no one to verify what you have learned except with the teacher. Keep in mind that others learn better when they discuss information with others. They might get shy to do this with the teacher.
3.)    Can be costly
Instructors charge per hour for each training session.  Thus, the longer you study with an instructor, the more expensive it can get. Somehow you will be forced to finish the program as soon as possible.
4.)    Finding the right mentor is difficult
It is possible that you and your coach might not be “in sync” with each other. This may prove to be difficult for you and your coach to get along with. Furthermore, his/her teaching method may not appropriate for your learning style.
5.)    Lack of constructive feedback from classmates
One of the benefits of joining a class in a traditional setup is that your classmates can give you constructive feedback or even study tips. In a one-on-one coaching setup, the sole source of feedback is your mentor. It might be difficult for you to process his/her comments since he/she is coming from a teacher’s point of view.
Indeed, joining IELTS training is more fun with others than on your own. You can ask them for some tips and practice speaking in English with them. In IELTS Cebu, students engage in dialogues and provide feedback on how well each has performed.

Remember the old saying, “different strokes for different folks”? Some people learn better with others, while some learn better on their own. Then again, the disadvantages presented above should not stop you from doing what works for you especially in preparing for the IELTS exam.
