Who takes the IELTS Academic test?

The Academic exam is a requirement for non-native English speakers who are looking to reside and thrive in a higher learning environment, specifically:

  • individuals who are continuing their higher education - be it at an undergraduate level or a postgraduate level - in an English-speaking country or community; and
  • individuals who are applying for professional registration in an English-speaking country or community.

What is the IELTS Academic test format?

Like its counterpart, the IELTS Academic exam also evaluates the four primary communication skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Here is how each component is tackled.

  •  Listening evaluation - Test facilitators allow 30 minutes to listen to four audio materials, pinpoint significant details in the recordings, and answer the given questionnaire. Another 10 minutes is provided for transferring answers to the answer sheet.
  • Reading evaluation - One hour is provided to go through three long passages and accomplish the tasks after each text. The nature of the readings ranges from analytical and discursive to factual and descriptive. Graphic organizers, charts, diagrams, and other visual data presentations may also be included in the text.
  • Writing evaluation - Test facilitators will give you an hour to accomplish two writing tasks which may include: data interpretation, information summary, process description, and essay composition.
  • Speaking evaluation - A maximum of 14 minutes is given to answer questions, analyze concepts, and present opinion via discourse. This assessment is conducted in a one-on-one interview arrangement.
