Any competent IELTS UKVI review center sets its students up for success by fortifying their linguistic foundations. Exceptional IELTS training facilities like the JRooz Review Center cover all the fundamental grammar rules of English - starting from the elementary level lessons. By helping them master core principles such as the figures of speech and the subject-verb agreement, JRooz Review Center instructors do not only help students hone their English communication skills but also prepare them for the more complex aspects of the language.

Punctuation is one of those language rules that most test takers overlook. Most people stop their active efforts to learn the proper usage of reference marks once they master how to use the most common kinds - the period, the comma, the question mark, and the exclamation point. Many pay the consequences of their complacency later when they take the high-stakes exam.

The Swinging Gate; a.k.a. The Semi colon

Semicolons are represented by a comma with a period on top. As described by the Glamour of Grammar by Roy Peter Clark, the semicolon acts like a "swinging gate" in sentences. It can simultaneously separate and connect two ideas.

The Functions of a Semicolon

Combine two or more related independent clauses
Examples:
•    She didn't forget anything; there was a steaming cup of coffee beside the newspaper on the kitchen table.
•    It's already a quarter past five; it looks like we won't reach home before dark.

Pay attention to how the sentence samples above are also grammatically correct if you swapped the semicolons for periods.

•    She didn't forget anything. There was a steaming cup of coffee beside the newspaper on the kitchen table.
•    It's already a quarter past five. It looks like we won't reach home before dark.

Take note that if a conjunction is included to connect the two complete clauses, the correct punctuation mark to use will be the comma.

•    She didn't forget anything, for there was a steaming cup of coffee beside the newspaper on the kitchen table.
•    It's already a quarter past five, and it looks like we won't reach home before dark.
Introduce conjunctive adverbs

Example:
Reports of the car accident were greatly exaggerated by the press; indeed, the actress was released from the hospital the day after the crash with just a couple of stitches.

Present a sequential list

Examples:
The investigator wanted to check out the records of the following barangays in Metro Manila for his case: Amihan, Quezon City; Bagumbong Caloocan City; Hagonoy, Taguig City; and Tondo, Manila City.

Spice up your compositions and essays with on-point punctuation application. Master the proper usage of the semicolon by enrolling in an excellent IELTS UKVI review center.
