•    Determine your purpose
Before you start reading ask yourself: Why? Do you need to delve into each detail of the article or do you only have to get the gist? Understand that some texts are harder than others and require different reading strategies. Once you have identified your purpose, it will be easier to come up with the correct approach in reading and understanding a specific text.

•    Take down notes
Maximize the white spaces in your paper, and take down notes. This practice is better than just highlighting or underlining the ambiguous terms or phrases. Once you have identified the difficult areas, write down how you understood them or how they were explained in the paragraph. Another technique is to go through the meaning of the difficult words in the dictionary and write it down in the white spaces. Taking down notes allows you to be more involved in the reading process.

•    Read actively
Active reading means adjusting your reading speed and taking down notes. Active readers slow down and reread sections to understand their meaning better. More importantly, they always keep a dictionary close at hand to quickly look up meaning of terms they do not understand. Active readers also consider the author’s purpose. They try to understand the author’s perspective and look for the basis of their arguments.

•    Re-state the paragraphs
Understand the meaning of the passage and write them down. This is an effective technique to determine the author’s purpose and argument. Try to summarize the passage by looking at one or two major key points. Write using your own words to check your comprehension.

•    Reread
The key to understanding confusing terms and concepts is to reread the whole article. Take a break for a few seconds and revisit the selection once more. Reading after you get the main idea of the article allows you to clarify information and check the concepts you have missed.
Understanding the English language can be difficult at first, but with discipline and the proper mindset, it can be fun and easy. Learn more tricks on how to enhance your knowledge and skills with JRooz IELTS Philippines.
