The IELTS exam has four components: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. Some IELTS test-takers in the IELTS review center in Davao find the Writing section challenging.

This section is composed of two tasks depending on the type of IELTS test you decide to take. Whether you plan to take the IELTS Academic or the IELTS General Training test, you will encounter an essay writing task. Even after taking the IELTS, you will also encounter essay writing tasks for some project in the university or some report writing in the workplace. Thus, it is important that you know which topic you should focus on to present your arguments.

Here is a quick guide to help you come up with a good topic for your essay.
•    Select a topic of your interest. It is important that you choose a subject that is close to your field. What issues interest you most? What is the most relevant social issue that you can discuss? Aside from choosing a topic based on your interest, it is also important that you take into consideration your audience. Make sure that they would understand your selected topic.

•    Start with a broad subject. You cannot come up with a particular topic just yet. You need to determine which topics are of importance both to you and the reader. List down possible problems, anything under the sun—i.e. agriculture, politics, and literature—as this will be your starting point.

•    Choose a topic which you can backup with facts. It is helpful to select a topic that you are well-versed. Prior knowledge of the subject can help you in determining the key points that you can discuss in the latter part of the essay.

•    Look at the context. In some instances that you are given a subject to write about, try to understand the context of the subject. What other topics have not yet been discussed? What more profound things can you dig from the subject? What topic will trigger the imagination and curiosity of the readers?

•    Narrow down your topic. Create a Venn diagram, and map out your chosen topic until you arrive at a more particular subject to discuss. Determine the additional specifics about your topic—i.e. target audience, specific factors that affect the issue. You can further narrow down your topic by geographical area, time frame, discipline, and culture, among others.
Determining the focus of your composition is one of the most crucial steps in essay writing. Apply the tips mentioned above and supplement your IELTS preparation. Maximize your preparation period with JRooz Review Center!
