You can rely on your IELTS review center instructors to teach you everything you need to know to get your band score goal. This does not mean, however, that you have to depend solely on their teachings. To have the best chance of IELTS success, you have to complement your training program with your own study sessions.

The M.U.R.D.E.R. Study System

The M.U.R.D.E.R. study system was developed by Joe Landsberger of the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota, US. The acronym stands for mood, understand, recall, digest, expand, and review.

Here’s how it works.

Set a positive mood before you start reviewing. Find the ideal study time and environment to get into the right mindset for studying.

Go through your study materials. Focus on a single lesson or a manageable set of exercises. Take note of any lesson points that you do not completely understand so you can go over them later.

After studying your lesson, stop and summarize what you have learned using your own words.

Return to the key points that you did not understand. Reconsider their information, and, if you still cannot fully understand them, consult other sources (e.g., other books, the Internet, or a teacher).

Ask these three questions concerning the review material:
•    If you can talk to the writer, what questions would you ask or what criticisms would you offer?
•    How can you apply what you learned to what you are interested in?
•    How can you make this study material more engaging and understandable to other students?

Go over the study material again. Reflect on what strategies helped you understand and remember the information it contained. Apply these techniques to your future studies.

Using M.U.R.D.E.R. for IELTS

Complementing your IELTS review center program with the M.U.R.D.E.R. study system will do wonders for your test performance. Here’s how to apply the study strategy to your IELTS review.

Find a study-conducive place and prepare your review materials. Review your past lessons or IELTS practice tests to get in the right mindset for studying.

Go through the study material that your IELTS review center provided. Focus on a single chapter if it has a lot of units. Jot down notes on the material’s margins or a separate notebook. Take note of the lesson points that you do not fully understand.

Keep your study material. Then, using your own words, summarize what you have learned. You can create an outline, discuss it with someone, or come up with a concept map.

Go back to the key points that you did not understand. Go through them again and if you still cannot fully grasp their concept, use other sources to learn more about them. Ask your IELTS review center instructor to explain them in your next class or search the Internet.

Ask the three questions specified in the “expand” step above.

Reread the study material. Consider what study techniques helped you comprehend and retain its lesson. Use these strategies to your other study tasks.
