7 Memory-Impairing Things That You Probably Did Not Know

Do you have trouble remembering your IELTS review center instructor’s name even after several classes? Do you find yourself rereading recently discussed study material because you cannot recall key points? Do not worry; most of the time, these kinds of memory lapses are normal.

Contrary to what most people believe, age is not the only thing that weakens memory. Studies show that the following things can also affect retention negatively.

  1. Fatty foods
  2. As satisfying as it is to eat greasy burgers and fries after a long day of studying, do your best to curb your appetite for high-fat foods. Aside from causing cardiovascular diseases, a high-fat diet can also induce short- and long-term memory issues. So, avoid stopping by fast food joints after attending your IELTS review center class.
  3. Stress
  4. While it is difficult not to get stressed when you are preparing for an exam that can change your life, it is vital that you do not feel overwhelmed. Studies show that a continuous increase of stress hormones can impair the area of the brain that is responsible for retention. So find ways to relieve stress during your IELTS online review.
  5. Lack of sleep
  6. Forget about sacrificing sleep to extend your IELTS review time. Not only does sleep deprivation impair memory, but it also reduces awareness, slows reaction time, and induces mental and physical fatigue. Getting a few extra hours of study time is not worth compromising your cognitive functions. Practice your time management skills instead.
  7. Anxiety and depression
  8. According to experts, worrying too much can actually weaken your memory. Your mood affects your ability to recall information. Mood disorders like anxiety and depression impair areas in your mind that are responsible for memory development and retrieval. The severity of the mood disorder reflects the severity of the memory lapses.
  9. Smoking
  10. Here’s another reason to drop this bad habit: smoking deteriorates your memory. It interferes with your brain’s blood supply, impairing your ability to process, relay, and retain information.
  11. Listening to loud music
  12. Studies reveal a connection between listening to loud music and memory issues. So, make sure to keep your music volume at a reasonable level.
  13. Heavy drinking
  14. Getting smashed the night before an IELTS review center class is a major no-no. Even if your alcohol level is back to normal by the time of your session, you will still experience delayed recognition and impaired retention—as found by a study in 2004.
Your mind is shaped by many internal and external factors. Preserve your retention skills by avoiding these memory-weakening things. Take care of your memory to make the most out of your IELTS online review course.
