5 Things IELTS Test Takers Do While Studying … to Avoid Studying (Part 1)

Everyone is guilty of doing something just to avoid their studies. Most trick their mind into thinking that what they’re doing will further their test preparations—and to some extent—it probably does. Taking study breaks, for instance, are essential to a productive review session right? Not all the time.

While there’s nothing wrong with putting off your studies from time to time, it’s definitely not okay to do so if you’re training for a high-stakes exam like the IELTS. Procrastinating will kill your chances of success, especially if you’re preparing with a one-day IELTS review course.
So, pay attention to your study practices. If you’re going to engage in any of the things below, make sure you do so in moderation.

1. Getting a snack.
People have different reasons for raiding their fridge in the middle of a study session. They’re hungry; they’re craving something; they need something flavorful to stimulate them back to awareness; etc. Here’s the thing though. If your reason isn’t to satisfy your hunger, you’re probably just looking for an excuse to leave your desk.

2. Using your mobile phone.
You hear your phone buzz. You check it and find that you have a message from your friend. It’s probably important. So, you open your messaging app to reply. Hey, you’re already on your phone. Why not check what’s happening on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram? Might as well update your mobile game too. The next thing you know, you’ve spent an hour on your phone. The IELTS package training material you were studying earlier sits neglected on your desk.

3. Cleaning your desk.
Time to study for the IELTS exam! You take out all your review materials and practice exams. Your desk looks a little cluttered now—definitely not conducive for studying. No problem! You just need to clean it up, arrange your study materials in the most aesthetically pleasing way possible, and post a pic on Facebook and Instagram. #StudyGoals #ReadyToStudy right? If you’re a bit of a neat freak, make sure you curb your cleaning tendencies appropriately.

4. Refilling your water bottle.
Everyone knows that drinking water has a lot of physical and mental benefits. It’s why you keep yours close during your study sessions. A few sips in and it’s half empty and you can’t have that. Better stand up to fill it up.

5. Going to great lengths to get your caffeine fix.
Most people need to have some caffeine in their system before they tackle their studies—especially if they’re going to do something intensive like a one-day IELTS review course. If you’re one of them, go ahead and find a strong brew. Just don’t let your quest for coffee get in the way of your studies.

The things on this list? Everyone had done some of them at some point in their academic life. There’s a huge chance that you’re going to do some of them during your IELTS package. And, that’s okay. Just make sure you do so in a way that enhances your test preparations!
