         1.    Examine the question

Read the question and determine its overall idea. Ask yourself, “What kind of information is needed to answer this question?” before you listen to the audio clip.

         2.    Look for keywords

As you examine the question, look for keywords or key phrases. Names, dates, and specific terminologies are some examples of keywords used in multiple-choice questions.

         3.    Listen carefully

Don’t skip any parts of the recording as it might cost you to miss important ideas or concepts in the audio clip.

         4.    Detect signposts

Signposts are words and phrases that speakers used when connecting, emphasizing, or concluding ideas in a speech or an argument. As you listen to the audio clip, notice the signposts used by the speaker in the recording. Here are some examples of signposts:

         6.    Evaluate the three options

Read and analyze the three possible answers. Determine the main idea of each option by identifying and highlighting their keywords.

         7.    Use the process of elimination

The process of elimination is the most common test-taking strategy when dealing with multiple-choice questions. To do this effectively, simply remove an option that is not related to the question. Then, examine the remaining possible answers and pick the one that perfectly suits the question.

         8.    Manage your time

Time management plays a critical factor in answering multiple-choice questions. Don’t spend too much time on one question. If you don’t figure out the answer to a specific question, skip it and come back to it later.

         9.    Paraphrase the question

Paraphrasing is also important in this listening task. If you still can’t figure out the answer to a multiple-choice question, paraphrase the question and underline its keyword. Then use your notes to find a specific detail that is identical or related to the paraphrased question.

        10.  Review your answers

Once you have answered all the multiple-choice questions, review your responses before you proceed to the next part of the IELTS Academic Listening Test.
